GANON Redesign - [ZELDA - A Link to the Past] by Cylent-Nite GANON Redesign - [ZELDA - A Link to the Past] by Cylent-Nite
So recently I bought Hyrule Warriors for the Wii U and have been deeply addicted to it, and as a result the Legend of Zelda series is the current thing I'm into, haha. I've always held quite a bit of interest in the Zelda series, especially since I bought the Hyrule Historia a few years ago (I was especially impressed with the established timeline for the series!), but I could never really get into the series myself personally since I didn't really have any ideas for it nor could I really devote the time to learn more about the series lore. Now that I have a lot more free time lately since I've lost my job, I've just been playing a lot of games and reading stuff about the Zelda series, haha...

I've been able to appreciate all the characters, the lore, and the aforementioned official timeline for the series a lot more; Not sure if many of my watchers are into the series as such so I'll try not to yaffle on too much about these things. One character who always really struck a chord with me was Ganon/Ganondorf and how his presence is apparent for the most part of the series history as well as the branching timelines. With regard the timelines in particular, I've always been amused by how after Ocarina of Time and the subsequent branching timelines, Ganondorf takes on quite different appearances for Twilight Princess (Child Link Timeline), Wind Waker (Adult Link Timeline), and most of all, A Link to the Past (Fallen Hero Timeline). With the latter example and other "Classic Ganon" appearances, I've always found it cool how different his design looks compared to the modern day Ganondorf, haha!

That being said, the idea behind this redesign I've done here is redesigned Ganon from A Link to the Past in order to reconcile his appearance as coming from being the same Ocarina of Time incarnation, basically emphasizing that they're the same character, while giving the design better depth akin to his Twilight Princess and Wind Waker appearances. For those unaware, the Fallen Hero Timeline is a split in the timeline, where during the final battle in Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf was actually victorious over Link (so cool lol). So this Ganon carries on after that point of time and leading into A Link to the Past, taking on a bestial appearance upon being sealed within the Dark World/Sacred Realm. This redesign was based and focused more on the in-game sprited visuals of his design rather than official artwork:… (video of the final battle in LttP for reference)

So I wanted to really maintain the basic look of the sprites, giving him the turquoise skin-tone, basic head and body shape, and key palette elements in his attire, while at the same time still reconciling the fact that this is Ganondorf post-OoT (possibly a beginning phase before further devolving?), so I've given him notable orange hair across his body and also given his face a Ganondorf-esque facial appearance. His clothing and armour I've based obviously on the basic design traits of the sprites, but added a lot more detail to compare with Ganondorf from Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, while focusing his stockier build ala Wind Waker. The Trident design I've ganked totally from Hyrule Warriors lol. I've put a particular focus on the skull draped around his neck, headcanoning that the skull is that of the Hero of Time after he defeated him, haha! (That is of course, if Breath of the Wild's Link isn't the Hero of Time as I've seen people theorize, haha!)

Anyways, let me know what you guys think! I know it's not the usual from me, but I want to get my Zelda craze out of my system lol. This is the first of a three-part series I'm doing, with this Ganon representing the Downfall Timeline. I'll be designing an older Link to represent the Child Timeline, and an older Zelda to represent the Adult Timeline, as a means of presenting some of my own personal headcanon. Until then, enjoy!

Call me a cranky old-timer, but to this day I've never really accepted human Ganondorf. Original pig monster Ganon has always been the version I liked, even if none of the individual versions of him were quite perfect. The original looks kinda goofy, the version he turned into at the end of Ocarina of Time had some funky proportions and so on, but I still like that overall idea more than the human versions. Not that I mind the idea that he was born a human and later turned into a pig monster, I'd just rather see him appear as the pig monster. I like how that version contrasted against the very normal human (aside from the elf ears) Link. Plus, that idea allows for more variation as I see it. As human Ganondorf he has to be human size and do human things, but as a pig monster he can be super huge like at the end of OoT and that doesn't seem wrong, because who's to say what's the right size for a weird monster like that? And holding two big swords at once? Why not, monsters can certainly have super strength.

So yeah, personally I keep my fingers crossed that every new Zelda will have a return of pig Ganon and finally give him a truly good design. It still hasn't happened, in fact it seems like the gap between Zelda designs and character designs I like continues to grow with each game, but I can hope.

A demon. Not "a pig monster". He's a demon. He'd always had a demonic spirit, since he was the reincarnation of the previous Demon King; Demise. His wish on the Triforce, which created the Dark World, is also what destroyed his humanity (which is what he wanted). During the final battle in Ocarina of Time, he simply shows his true form. The reason he maintains his Ganondorf form is, probably partly out of nostalgia, but also out of exactly what you said; in order for him to do human things. It's for convenience.

Woah! That's and amazing redesign. I'm curious! If you don't mind the questions; how long did you take to draw and color this? And, did you use photoshop or any other software? Amazing artwork here.

This is actually a really good take on Ganon's design. I'm just not sure if the green thing is supposed to be hair or some sort of grass stuck to his skin.

Thanks! The green patches are actually scales of sorts, kind of referencing Demise a little but also to represent Ganondorf's green skin having peeled over the turquoise.

I am a big fan of Ganondorf, he is one of my favorite characters from Zelda. I really like this design, good combination of the different Ganondorfs with pig features, but the  one thing I miss is the glorious mane of Ganondorf from Hyrule Warriors.

Excellent presentaton of Ganon the King Of Evil! I love how he's very clearly hog-like in appearance and still recognizably Ganondorf as well...!

Nice, is the crack over the eye of the skull a reference to the heros shade?
Cylent-Nite Featured By Owner Sep 16, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Yup, definitely a loose reference to the idea of the Hero's Shade missing an eye! Really good pick up there!

just noticed the last line in your description, I'm pretty sure I know what you have planned for zelda. Might be wrong but it'd be awesome if we had similair headcannons in zelda too.

Certainly is an interesting take on Ganon. It looks like it could actually happen in timeline, too...

I may not have played much of the Zelda series either (Hyrule Warriors is the only one I own, let alone have beaten), but I am familiar with MOST of the timeline...
I'm kinda hoping Breath of the Wild isn't part of the timeline (much like Hyrule Warriors), cause there looks to be a lot of references to past games... but Majora's Mask made a cameo in A Link Between Worlds, so what do I know? ^^;
